How to Wash Kids' Clothes So They Survive the Year
Most children's clothes are not outgrown. They are washed to death first: faded, bobbled and stretched out of shape long before the child has gained the four centimetres that would have retired them anyway.
The five that matter

Why softener is the one people argue about
Fabric softener works by depositing a thin waxy film on the fibres. On a flat weave that feels pleasant. On a brushed knit it lies across the raised loops and mats them down, so the fabric gets smoother and less soft at the same time, and it stops absorbing moisture properly, which in this climate is the whole point. Stains, in the order children make them
Food and grease
A drop of washing-up liquid worked in with a finger, ten minutes, then a normal cold wash. Do not put it in the dryer until the mark has gone. Heat sets grease permanently.
Grass and mud
Let mud dry completely and brush it off before it goes anywhere near water. Wet mud spreads; dry mud lifts.
Ink and marker
Blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes pigment deeper into the knit and widens the mark.
First wash of a deep colour
Expect a little dye release in the first two or three washes of navy or graphite, and wash them separately for those. After that it settles and stops. Our colour is set before the fabric is cut rather than after the garment is sewn, which is why it then holds.
