When Does a Child in Dubai Actually Need a Hoodie?

People moving here from a cold country ask whether their children will need warm clothes at all. The answer is yes, far more than they expect, and almost entirely for indoor reasons.

Two different needs

There is the indoor layer, worn every month of the year against air conditioning that runs at twenty or twenty-one degrees in classrooms, cinemas, malls and cars. And there is the outdoor layer, needed for perhaps ten weeks between December and February when Dubai evenings genuinely drop to fifteen or sixteen degrees.

The mistake is buying for the second and ignoring the first. A thick winter coat will be worn a handful of times. A mid-weight cotton zip-up will be worn most days of the year.

What weight to buy
